Creation of an artifact/mask for group work BA4

Mask Iteration and Design

During this unit my group and I decided to use masks for our game idea. This blog post will lead you through the creative process that I used to generate my final image.

Initially I wanted to generate a wooden looking, scruffy mask, (see opening image ^) but as the influences i had were native american/south american (Mayan, Aztec, Native american-indian), so my researched led me away from this simple (and rather creepy) design. I then looked at aztec masks, and found lots of gold, and large headdresses, the native american indian masks had lots of blue, red and white, and tended to be of animals rather than humans, and the mayan masks had lots of intricacies.

I drew the basic linework to illustrate my idea, however i was not totally happy with it, but i made a start anyway, and changed what i could as i went.

then i blocked out colour, adding a small amount of shadow to give the image depth. I was not happy with the colour scheme, and the headdress did not feel right, so i went back and edited some more..
And i generated this headdress and recoloured the eyepiece. This felt a lot more native, with the large leaves giving a element of exotic nature. I made a few itterations of this, with various ecoutrements

These are the iterations that include tongue and goatee, our group decided to stick with just the mask as it felt much more solid.
